STOP Expansion of Exeter Airport

Exeter Airport has to face reality

Regional & City Airports - the new owners of Exeter Airport - has to come to terms with the real world.

In order to meet our commitment to stop climate change, the UK has to make cuts in CO2 emissions of 90% by 2030. No sector of the economy can be insulated from this requirement.

We have calculated that passenger numbers at Exeter Airport will need to be cut from about a million passengers a year in 2006/2007, to about 250,000 passengers by 2030. (This includes a 30% improvement in overall efficiency over that period).

In April or May Exeter Airport will release its Airport Master Plan requesting an increase from 1 million to 3.3 million passengers per year. This is simply not compatible with stopping climate change.

We intend to ensure that the new owners of the airport come to terms with their real world responsibility.

Climate Change: The Real Cost of Air Travel

In order to meet our personal responsibility we all need to cut our personal CO2 emissions from 12 tonnes a year to about 1.2 tonnes. The following chart shows just how challenging a target this is.

Note: the above figures include the 2.7 "radiative forcing" multiplier.

You can see from the above chart that if air travel takes up about 20% of all our emissions then each person in the UK can afford to take a holiday to Spain about once every 5 years, or a flight to New York every 16 years.
