The Energy Review 2006 - Nuclear Power is not the answer

I would like to respond to the Energy Review Consultation.

I note that the Government wishes to introduce a new programme of Nuclear Power stations to solve our energy and climate change problems.

For the following reasons, I believe that Nuclear Power would be the wrong choice.

  • Nuclear Power Stations cannot be built in time to stop climate change.
  • Dwindling supplies of uranium prevent Nuclear Power being a long-term solution.
  • The Nuclear Waste problem has still to be solved. It would be immoral to add further waste to this serious legacy.
  • There is a serious danger of a melt down or - even worse - a terrorist attack.
  • Nuclear Power is hopelessly uneconomic, and the nuclear industry will not build new nuclear power stations without huge public subsidies.
  • Nuclear Power does not provide energy security. The major world stocks of uranium are lcoated in Kazakhstan and Namibia.
  • Nuclear Power is not even Carbon-Free. Mining Uranium, manufacturing fuel rods and building power stations emit huge quantities of carbon dioxide.

The cost of such a risky venture would be huge and would mean that needed investment in energy conservation and renewable technologies would not happen.

We must also face the fact that if we are to avoid climate change then we must make significant changes to our lifestyle. And the government can start work on enabling these changes immediately - we dont have to wait 20 years or so before Nuclear Power stations come on stream.

Nuclear Power would be a disaster!

Yours sincerely
