TRAFFIC!

It’s never out of the news. And there’s one thing that everyone agrees on. There’s too much of it.

And another thing - there is a deep sense that there is nothing we can do about it. Even Local Authorities seem to be incapable of dealing with it. But we can reduce traffic.

We don’t need to accept the ever-increasing damage that traffic does to us (Noise, danger, pollution, frustration, etc.). We can stop traffic growth spiralling out of control. Indeed, because of the threat of climate change, we have no real choice but to stop the traffic.

It is now "bite the bullet" time. To imagine that we can continue to allow traffic to destroy our quality of life (and our climate) is to live in a fantasy world. We have to act now.

The Arctic Ice Sheet is melting. The evidence of Climate Change is now inescapable. The world’s top climate scientists are in agreement that Climate Change is happening now, and all humanity has to act now to stop the possible eclipsing of all humanity.

A key part of this is to cut our addiction to the motorcar. Motorists, business people, politicians, shoppers - all joining together with the same responsibility, the same commitment and the same desire to create a better Exeter, and a better world. We can achieve this goal by working together.

But, first, we have to agree to three things: A Target, a Pledge and a Plan.

  • The Target: To reduce traffic in Exeter by 3% every year, until we have reduced traffic levels to about 30% of what they are now.
  • The Pledge: A commitment to be made by everyone in Exeter to personally reduce car mileage, and to work towards making the plan work. sign the pledge
  • The Plan: A Traffic Reduction Strategy to be implemented jointly by Devon County Council, and Exeter City Council. download the plan
