SUMMARY
Robin Wilding has Bachelor and Master's degrees in Dentistry, with a Diploma in Prosthodontics, from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He also has a Doctorate awarded for a thesis on the factors which determine chewing efficiency. He has a number of research publications in international journals and has lectured in South Africa, as Professor in Dental Prosthetics and later Oral Biology at the University of the Western Cape, to undergraduates, postgraduates and practitioners. He is the author of "Applied Oral Physiology -clinical aspects of the biology of the teeth and jaws". He has recently completed a Master's degree in Holistic Science. He is a registered Prosthodontist in the United Kingdom.

1964 - 1969 University of the Witwatersrand B.D.S degree completed.

1969 - 1971 Private practice Harare.

1971 - 1974 Registrar/Junior Lecturer Department of Dental Prosthetics, University of the Witwatersrand. Diploma in Prosthodontics completed.

1974 - 1981 Private practice as Specialist Prosthodontist in Cape Town. Obtained an M.Dent. from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1975. Held part-time appointments teaching undergraduate and postgraduates at the University of Stellenbosch and the University of the Western Cape.

1975 - 1981 Consultant in Maxillo Facial Prosthetics to the Dental Unit of Groote Schuur Hospital.

1981 - 1986 Professor and Head of the Department Prosthetic Dentistry, University of the Western Cape.

1987-1997 Professor and Head of Department of Oral Biology, University of the Western Cape.

1996 Awarded PhD, from the University of the Western Cape.


1999. Awarded Masters degree in Holistic Science jointly from Schumacher College, Dartington, and the University of Plymouth. .


1999 Registered with the General Dental Council of the United Kingdom as a Specialist Prosthodontist..


2003 Appointed organiser of the Prosthetic course offered by the Bristol University Open Learning for Dentists as part of the Diploma in Post Graduate Education.

CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS

1. The development of clinical and laboratory techniques which will allow the assembly of pre-formed denture segments, in order to make dentures more available to all members of our society.


2. The investigation of normal masticatory function in order to develop baseline data which is essential in the evaluation of dysfunction. This work was the basis of my Ph.D thesis.

3. The investigation of craniomandibular dysfunction.

4. The development of research and problem based learning in the dental curriculum.

5. Fractal properties of bone radiographs. This work includes clinical studies of bone around dental implants, vertebral bone in post menopausal females, chnages in the TMJ condyle in with ostoarthritis, and experimental studies on the strength of sheep mandibles after healing.
