Applied Oral Physiology
|
Applied Oral Physiology is a textbook and reader suitable for undergraduate dental students. Oral Hygiene students will also find the text accessible with the aid of the Dictionary of Terms at the end of the book. It is written using simple language so as to be accessible to students whose first language is not English. A digital printing process has been used, which enables regular revisions to be made.
Presentation of material. The book brings together the scientific information and explanation a student needs as a foundation for the clinical disciplines of dentistry. The approach used is to integrate the necessary basic science disciplines. For example, subjects such as dental caries, are introduced by an integrated review of relevant aspects of oral microbiology and immunology, the physiology of saliva, the evolution and anatomy of the tooth and the phenomenon of biofilms. The capacity of the pulp/dentine to repair itself and arrest caries is reviewed in order to promote an evidence based approach to restoration. Part of the Chapter 4, on the Dental Hard Tissues has been adapted for this website, and covers the topic Promoting the Arrest of Caries .

Figure 4.9. A S.E.M image (X 300, window X 1500) of dentine tubules viewed from the root pulp. Note the high density of tubules in comparison with coronal pulp. Root dentine is more permeable than coronal dentine. The larger holes are accessory to the apical root canal and may be responsible for endo-perio lesions. |
Liberal use is made of line diagrams and photographs to illustrate the text. At the end of each chapter is a set of questions which can be used as a basis for self learning. The Index and Dictionary of Terms provide interactive routes within the book to related information. A short reading list offers further sources. There are reviews at the end of some chapters which help provide wider interest.
