Luchia

03 July 2001

These pictures are of the first time Heather rode Luchia.  Luchia is a Lusitano x TB mare, nine years old, who has been hacked out by her previous owner for the last four years until last summer, when he became seriously ill with emphysema, and so the mare had not been ridden for a year.  To our knowledge, she has never been ridden in a school, certainly never ridden ‘in an outline’ as her shape testifies, has no muscle over her neck, back and quarters, has an enormously developed under-neck muscle and Heather commented when she first got on, that is is a long time since she had to peer over the top of the ears/head to see where she was going! I liked her when I went to see her and Heather bought her without even going to try her!

Luchia begins with HeatherJust got on - typical Luchia stance - Heather criticising herself for slouching whilst talking to a couple of students in the gallery!

Luchia starts to walkLooks like a hammock!

Luchia walkStarting to relax the lower jaw and lower the head.

Luchia trotLuchia now soft and released in her body, stepping through and on a very light contact -

Heather criticises her hands in photos 3 and 4 - too far apart and elbows too far back, although with no weight in the reins.  Will take some more photos tomorrow and Heather will correct her faults she says! We are also going to lunge each other.
