The Exeter Darkroom, which became the Photographers Centre was funded in 1989.
Throughout the next ten years it received funding from South West Arts and more recently from Exeter City Council.
From 1996 - 1999 the Darkroom was funded as a stratigic client. In the time it operated its range of facilities and operations increased.

In 1999 South West Arts decided to cut all funds from all the Photographic organisations in the South West.
The Darkroom was given 3 weeks notice of a total cut in funding.
As a result of this the Exeter Darkrom closed but was reborn as the Photographers Centre - run without funding by volunteers.
Eventually the finacial and practical considerations forced the Centre to close.

Photographers in Devon and Somerset now have to travel to Bristol for their nearest funded community Darkroom.
