Watershed Cinema - Photography - Education

Watershed is a leading media centre in the South West with extensive programmes in photography, education and film. Photography at Watershed includes a gallery and four other exhibition spaces, darkrooms offering black and white and colour facilities, a suite of digital equipment and a comprehensive range of courses. Our darkroom membership scheme provides the benefits of using the darkrooms at weekends and in the evenings plus savings on charges.
Please contact Box Office for further information and darkroom membership application forms.
The diverse exhibition programme at Watershed includes framed exhibitions, installations and digital imaging. Through work of imagination and flair, we seek to encourage critical understanding of the many practices of contemporary photography. We aim to show work that promotes awareness and debate about local and national cultures, and in an increasingly global context, the concerns and conditions in other societies. Our group or solo exhibitions may be newly commissioned work, existing material that has not been seen in the region before, or hired exhibitions produced by other national and international galleries. There are opportunities for first time exhibitors through to established photographers, both from the South West and further afield. Exhibitions are selected by a team comprising members of the Photography and Digital Imaging Department and external advisors.

Watershed Portfolio Sessions

Portfolio sessions at Watershed offer free advice to anyone wishing to get an informed opinion about their photography or digital work. The sessions are informal and normally last about one hour. They can be used to discuss image-making at all levels such as technical advice with production or presentation, discussion on how to set up or pursue a complete project, constructing an effective portfolio, looking at work in progress including contact sheets, and advice on artistic and professional advancement. The portfolio sessions are also designed to discuss the suitability of the work for exhibition at The Watershed or other venues as appropriate. Watershed welcomes the submission of digitally-generated work although prior notice is necessary. Work should be in one of the following formats: 88mb Syquest, 135 mb EZ drive Syquest, Zip or floppy disks; photographic work can be submitted as prints or transparencies.
If applicants feel that other special requirements should be provided in order to view work, it is important that they inform us in advance.
Portfolio sessions are run by the Photography Department staff together with members of Watershed Advisory Group, from 10am to 5pm, usually in the latter half of each month.
Bookings can be made through the Box Office.
