The Sacred
Art of Tibet

In Tibet , art flows in life and almost all of the arts are regarded as sacred . Everything seems to find itself enwrapped with artistic touches , onto the hemlines of clothes , carpets and lamps yet the area where this applies most so is in the temples and monastries .
mandala Unfortunately most of these treasures have been destroyed by the cultural revolution , yet many do still survive smuggled out into the west or in the remaining monastries and temples of Tibet .These pieces of art are far more than mere decoration and ornamentation , they are regarged as sacred windows or tools to trancend the earthly world and enter into the ultimate sacred realities . Through contemplation of mandalas , sculptures and icons known as 'tangkas' , dieties can come through into our world .
Within the imagery can be seen all the aspects of the human psyche exploring the mysteries of life , death and reincarnation and within the art one can see through different'transparent lenses' dissolving our attachments to the ego and the material world . It is with such Buddhist philosophies that Tibetan art has evolved , holding trancendant wisdom as its highest and most relevant ideal . Buddhism has inspired art within every region it has touched , sharing elements and meanings yet with each having its own style and quality . For the enlightened life has no other purpose other than art , for in this sense life itself is art that can communicate the vision of enlightenment and thus inspire others to find their own nirvana .
Tibetan art is very much famous for its erotic and terrific 'tantric' images exploring the masculine and femanine aspects of Buddha . Many of our recent psychological discoveries are inherent in Tibetan art and in this inner-space Tibetan civilization has something of its own unique value to contribute to humanity .
