December NewsLetter (1997)

We have released our first newsletter this month and anyone who would like one can ask us to forward one to them. Please use the feedback form or send an e-mail requesting this. We will supply it in plain text format or on paper whichever you require. Below you will find a brief summary of the newsletter.

If there is anyway that you can help please contact us. We do need as much help with funding as we can get. Most people think that we will survive and be here to help those requiring us without any funds at all.

I can assure you that if we do not get enough funding to continue for the next two years we will have to end the work that we are doing.

So far this year we have helped some 50 people to receive the correct Social Security benefits.

We have also supplied Walking Sticks and Tablet reminders to those with short memory.

As well as this we have given the computers mentioned earlier.

The costs of running the Charity are about £300.00 per month. None of the trustees or anyone working for the charity get any recompense for any of the time they put into this work.

The only person paid for his work is the Accountant.

Our phone bill for the last quarter was £800.00. this is not small change unless you happen to be a millionaire. Up until this time the charity was funded entirely out of my own pocket. This is not that deep, and that meant that my family had to do without the extras that we all take for granted. Help with this would be gratefully appreciated.

We are having a Christmas Raffle this year. You may purchase tickets by sending £1.00 per ticket to the address on page one. The prizes are as follows.

1st Prize is a Food Hamper, Bottle of Wine, House Plant

2nd Prize is a Pair of Theatre Tickets for the Northcott Theatre, Exeter

3rd Prize is a Basket of Fruit, Set of Glasses

4th Prize is a Flowering House, Plant Set of Glasses

5th Prize is a Set of Glasses and a small Cuddly Toy

6th Prize is aSet of Glasses and a small Cuddly Toy

As you can see not too large but, as much as we have been donated. Apart that is from the First Prize as it looks as if we will have to buy the food ourselves. There seems to be a lack of donations towards the food hamper.

We have told the Story of one of our Clients.

This was done with his permission to let people know that disability is not always seen but can have drastic effects on their life. Please take this into account before you all decide that every one on some benefits are all scroungers. This seems to be what is being said about all recipients of benefits now. Of course we all know that the government cannot afford to give everyone lots of money , but remember that not everyone can work and some of these people are of work due to severe disabilities.

We explain also that even though we all dislike being accosted by people selling flags and rattling boxes at us. There is in most cases no other way of funding most small charities. The large charities can put on large events and get themselves onto the TV, but for most of us this just isn't an option. We do not get Millions given to us in a year, in fact, we very rarely get anything and this means that we cannot give the kind of help that we are being asked for.

We require for just one person £2600.00 to get a piece of equipment that would allow her to live a life that most people would consider to be highly restricted. This girl would consider that level of movement as wonderful and would give anything to be able to acquire this.

We have promised to give help to try and get this equipment but we do require your help.

We have also promised to give £536.00 to Southbrook School to enable 5 children who are suffering with learning difficulties to go on a school trip to London, where they will have the opportunity to vista museums and the houses of Parliament. We are not able to give them the rest of the funding required so that the children can have some pocket money or go to see a show which is also planned. We do not have the funds but you may be able to help them.

Please get in touch if you can help any of the two things above.

There is also a need for able bodied Carers in the town of Yeovil, as there are few volunteers in this area. If you live in the area and can give a little of your time to help others please contact us here or contact the local Multiple Sclerosis Welfare Officer in the area.
