SEVERE FLOODING OF THE RIVER CULM ON THE 14th NOV 2002
From 6pm on the 13th to 2am on the 14th a total of 30mm of rain fell at Bradninch. And with all the wet weather we have had over the last 5 weeks the rivers had become very responsive to any rainfall.
At 1am all roads in the mid-Devon area were flooded or closed due to the amount of run off from fields and houses.
This is the 3rd time in the last 2 years that the river Culm has been over the road at Hele, but previous to that it has not been over the road for over 30 years, why!
Here is my theory - Rainfall is more intense and localised nowadays and also there has been major developments of houses up the Culm valley and this inevitably causes more run of from roofs and roads. Also these times that we have had heavy rainfall was because of a warm flow up from the south therefore bringing a lot of moisture and energy.
Below are photos from this years major flooding
