Computer Music review, Issue 17 "An abundance of delay is the most stiking thing about this track: Mike has used it all over the place in this ambient/dance effort. Things begin with a violin sample - played by Mike himself, presumably - and that delay we were referring to is all over it. Next to enter the fray are the drums and pulsing bass, and there's what sounds like a harpsichord at certain points. A deep, expansive synth pad soon gets involved in the action, and it's at this point that the vocals are brought in. These have been pitched fairly low in the mix, and have something of an Underworld quality about them in that you can't really make out the lyrics. Meanwhile, the pad is gliding along nicely with a few intruiging chord progressions to help it. As the track builds up, you realise that it has an almost choral quality at times - you can imagine it being played in a 21st century monastery. Although the song has an ambient feel to it, Mike has managed to avoid going down the new age, Deep Forest style road, which can only be a good thing in our book. This is due in no small part to the drum track, which always gives the song a sense of purpose and has been livened up towards the latter stages. The violin is also re-introduced here, completing an accomplished piece of work." |
