South West England

Cruising the South West coast of England is a delight. Rivers, fishing harbours and bustling ports provide an astonishing variety of places to visit and enjoy. From the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Plymouth's Barbican to the perfect peace of the Helford river is just half a day away, sailing along one of the most beautiful coasts in the world.

There are boats in Dartmouth, Brixham and the Exe, and if you have a preference a ferry can usually be arranged if the time between charters permits. The Exe Estuary is the region's best kept secret; long known to locals as a fascinating and enjoyable place to sail, it is now becoming more widely popular. The well-marked channel leads you from the sea into a sheltered and wide expanse of water and a bird watcher's heaven. There are bird flocks of many species to be seen on the way to the Turf Locks pub at the Exeter Canal entrance, or further up-river to the ancient port of Topsham, or even to Exeter City via the Canal.

Across the Channel the North coast of Brittany beckons, and the Channel Islands await you, with beaches and entertainment, or tranquillity. It's your choice. Navigation is a challenge to the sailor in these waters, and a good landfall here is a very rewarding accomplishment.
