LIGHTNING DETECTION IMAGES

THUNDERSTORMS 17TH MAY 2002

The lightning detection system recorded  over 28,000 strikes during a 21hr period from 00:00 to 21:00 on the 17th in a 300 mile radius of Bradninch in mid-Devon. This was the 2nd best storm since I had the LDS installed back in 1998.
One strike that the eye can see can be made up of several strikes merging, so the 28,000 strikes recorded you would not see all of them as many would be very small ones.

Below are 6 images taken from the LDS at various times starting at 03:00 on the 17th.

At 03:00 there was no lightning around

04:00 shows storms approaching the southwest

04:41 at the height of the storm. 11 minutes after this we had a power cut so lost data for over 2 hours until I got back and turned on again.

07:02 shows first storms moving away and more coming in from the south

09:33 storms moving closer

These storms only brought sporadic flashes not like the one during the early hours on this morning.
