I can`t get it out of the garage with the blue light on!!.
I bought this bus in 1998, after meeting someone at the VW Euro show that mentioned they had a panel van for sale.
It turned out to be a ex firetruck, that needed some work. A price was agreed and two weeks later I trailered the bus home from Germany.
The bus was trailered home from Germany.
I spent the next 5 months changing the gearbox, swapping it to 12v electrics, adding alarm, radio etc. Most of the bolts were seized and it took longer than I thought.
After being on the road for about six months, I got a respray and what a disaster it was!! The guy who was painting my van lost interest in doing it after getting half of it done.
Three months later I got my bus back, the van looked very wavy as it had not been prepared properly. There was a lot of filler in the drip rail, as he wouldn`t weld the roof rack holes up!
It has since started to craze near some of the corners. As my camera was stolen with all the respray pictures on, I cannot tell what parts were done properly. It will all be re-done again (sigh!).
Bad paint!.
On the way back from the VoksWorld show 2000, the gearbox let go of most of it`s oil and the alternator broke!! I managed to get the bus home on the auxilary battery and had to push it into the garage.
It has been there since(!), partly because I decided to put 944 rear suspension on, but also I lost interest after being in an accident on the way home from the 50 years tour.
How the bus looks (JAN 2002).
Update 2002.
I have made new door panels for this bus after the insurance company wanted interior photos!(I thought that rain soaked hardboard didn`t look very good). I made new panels out of hardboard covered in black vinyl.
The fuel tank has been painted, so has my flashing light. I will be painting the engine bay again before reassembling eveything. The rear suspension is now type 3 with a 1303s box. The original drums have been machined to fit,
and I have a new set of 15" wheels.
The engine bay has been painted.
